Family Ministry Newsletter

From Rev. Dana

School has begun and the new church year is upon us!  Welcome to ALL! Now is the time to get registered for classes, and sign up to help in a few too.

There are a lot of changes in Family Ministry this year, based on our research last year.  Some of these important changes:

    • We will have a wider variety of events happening on Sunday mornings, so check out the links to each grade level’s calendar for the year below.
    • We realize everyone has busy lives and you have to choose which Sundays to attend church. We are planning special events called Immersion Experiences intended to be the most important and most impactful days during the year. We ask you to please prioritize these Sundays and join us for these important events. Dates listed below. Thank you!

  • Middle School and High School meet during the second service now!
  • High School will also continue to have youth group and OWL programming on Sunday evenings. Classes and events will continue to be combined with BVUUF youth.
  • Middle School will be using the curriculum, “Crossing Paths” which will include field trips to other churches and faith communities during the year.
  • We need more teachers in order to make this work. Please send Rev. Dana Lightsey an email, if you’d like to volunteer to teach or just occasionally help in any of our classes.

Many thanks to each of you for adding your beautiful selves into the mix of our beloved community! I look forward to our year together and to seeing you all SOON!

Rev. Dana

New Church Year and New Programming

We want to take care of your kids, include them in all our activities and help them grow in every way possible. To best support our efforts, we need a registration form for each person under the age of 18.

One of our goals is to integrate the rest of the congregation with our children and youth. This is one of the most important ways to support their spiritual development.  To help us do this, please volunteer to teach or assist in at least two classes per semester. You can do this on the registration form.

For those who like to plan ahead, here are links to the schedules for the rest of the year.

Preschoolers are welcome to attend these events or play in the nursery.

We have a wide range of activities planned for these ages, including Sundays with: games and crafts, lessons about the monthly theme, social justice immersion experiences, worship immersion experiences, Children’s Chapel (interactive worship service just for kids), Family Worship (interactive worship service for families). Middle School: Grades 6th-8th. We are offering a new Middle School Class this year called, “Crossing Paths”. This is a “Neighboring Faiths” type of curriculum that helps our youth learn about other religions and faith traditions. We will visit a number of other faith communities and attend their services during the year.

High School (Sunday morning): Grades 9th-12th. The high school youth will be learning about the history and development of white supremacy culture and working on social justice projects with those who experience oppression due to white supremacy culture. They will determine much of their own curriculum in conjunction with our Youth Coordinator, Galen Pereira. UUCB youth will also combine with BVUUF youth on projects and events.

Registration for evening classes will be separate and will be available in a few weeks.

THANK YOU for helping us to make this new program a success!

Building a Better World: Social Justice Immersion Experiences

Our world today is full of issues and challenges that have their roots in white supremacy culture that has developed over many hundreds of years. The lives of our children and youth are greatly impacted by this and will be for the rest of their lives.  These Immersion Experiences will help them explore their feelings and develop their own sense of justice and equality through studying about issues, taking action, and reflecting on their experiences. This is for Preschool through High School.

Our Fall Immersion Experience will explore the development of white supremacy culture and the impact on indigeneous cultures around the world.

Finding Faith: Worship Immersion Experiences

Children and youth need worship services in their lives just as much as adults do.  And, they too are capable of creating meaningful and inspirational experiences for all ages. Worship Immersion Experiences give our children and youth the opportunity to do this. We will rehearse for three Sundays and lead the worship service for all ages in the sanctuary the following Sunday. This is for Preschool through High School.

Our kickoff is a fun BBQ and party on Friday, Sept 27th at 6:00 pm. Please bring a dessert or side dish to share and beverages.  We look forward to seeing you then!

We currently have a preschool called “Little Apple Bilingual Learning Center” that is renting space in our RE Wing from us.  They are currently going through the licensing process with the state and plan to have students attending classes soon.  One of the best ways we can support their efforts is to respect the boundaries that block off certain parts of the playground.  These boundaries are marked by mesh or canvas. The preschool cannot be approved to open if these barriers are removed or damaged.  Please do your part to help us maintain our covenant of respect and care with the preschool so they may have a thriving community and business, which also helps to support the church.

Thank you for your help with building this relationship
