Embracing each person in the LGBTQ+ Community, all spectrums of sexual orientation and gender identity.

Welcoming and Affirming to the LGBTQ+ Community

Unitarian Universalists affirm and promote the inherent worth and dignity of every person — and that means embracing each person in the LGBTQ+ Community, all spectrums of sexual orientation and gender identity.

The Unitarian Universalist Church of Boulder is certified by the Unitarian Universalist Association as a Welcoming Congregation. That means we live out our commitment to sexual and gender diversity by including people who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex, pansexual and asexual at every level of congregational life — in worship, in programs, and in social occasions.

We also put our values into practice through outreach, education and activism in partnership with the LGBTQ+ community. Here are some examples:

Pridefest

Members of UUCB celebrate the LGBTQ+ community each year by hosting booths and marching in parades at Pridefest celebrations in Boulder and Denver.

Standing On the Side of Love

Every year in September, members of UUCB and other Front Range UU churches gather at the Colorado capitol building to hold a public witness as part of the nationwide social justice campaign Standing on the Side of Love. From 2006-2014, the focus of these events was on securing marriage equality for all.

Our Whole Lives – Lifespan Sexuality Education

Our Whole Lives (OWL) is a collection of comprehensive, accurate, and developmentally appropriate curricula for sexuality education at all stages of life. UUCB regularly offers classes for children, adolescents, young adults, and older adults from our congregation and the local community.

Share Our Plate

Through the Share Our Plate program, half of the money collected through our Sunday offering plate is donated to local nonprofits and community partners, including a number of organizations that serve the LGBTQ+ community — like OUTBoulder, Boulder County Aids Project, and Planned Parenthood.

Inclusive Language & Bathrooms

UUCB is constantly working to improve the language we use to describe sexual and gender identities. We recently updated our bathroom signs to be more accessible, and designated one of our bathrooms as “all-gender”. We are cultivating the practice of naming our pronouns, revising our Bylaws to remove language that reinforces a gender binary, and incorporating gender-neutral pronouns among the stories told during our worship services.
