SUMMARY:The Grammar of Inclusion
DESCRIPTION:We live in a culture that tends to recognize just two genders\, male and female. The idea that there are only two genders is sometimes called a “gender binary.” Yet\, non-binary identities have been recognized for millennia by cultures and societies around the world. While our culture is starting to deconstruct the gender binary\, our linguistic structure reinforces the very division and discrimination that we seek to end. Together\, we will explore how we as Unitarian Universalists–and as a church community–can create a culture of belonging through pronouns and a new grammar of inclusion. \n“We are not what other people say we are.  We are who we know ourselves to be.” \n—Laverne Cox \n  \nRev. Teri Schwartz (she/her) is a UU Minister and the founder of Spirit+Strategy\, a pastoral care\, coaching\, and consulting practice\, and currently serves as the worship minister for the Juneau UU Fellowship.  Formly\, she served as Senior Co- Minister of First Unitarian Church of Chicago\, along with her husband and colleague\, our Rev. David Schwartz. As a clergy couple and partners in crime\, the Schwartzes (mostly) stay out of trouble by staying in church.  A graduate of Harvard Divinity School and Brown University\, she has formerly served as a chaplain in hospitals\, palliative care\, hospice\, and to UU seminarians.  She lives in Longmont\, with David\, their two kids\, ages 15 and 12\, a giant 170-pound St. Bernard dog\, but it’s really their three cats that run the household.

DESCRIPTION:Come join one of our Community Ministers\, Rev. Jeremy Nickel\, as he explores the intersection of Artificial Intelligence and our human quest for meaning. \n  \nJeremy D. Nickel thrives at the intersection of spirituality and technology.  A lifelong spiritual adventurer and entrepreneur\, after Graduate School in Berkeley\, CA and jobs in the tech world\, Jeremy was Ordained and served seven years as the Minister of Mission Peak UU Congregation.  He left in 2016 to launch EvolVR\, a secular/spiritual community in Virtual Reality. In January of 2022 EvolVR was acquired by the leading VR wellness company\, TRIPP.  Jeremy continues to lead the community (now re-named Together with TRIPP) as the VP of Community and Live Events at TRIPP. He also served as the Interim Minister at the UU Church of Boulder during the Pandemic. When un-plugged from his Ministry Jeremy enjoys spending time exploring the great outdoors of his newly adopted state of Colorado with his wife Nicole\, a UCC minister serving in Boulder\, and daughter Peaches.

SUMMARY:Family's Night Out
DESCRIPTION:Family’s Night Out is a quarterly\, catered event where caregivers and parents eat dinner in the Sky Room while kids have dinner separately. \nOctober’s Family’s Night Out is based off (UU) Ray Bradbury’s novella The Halloween Tree. In the story kids dressed as a witch\, mummy\, skeleton\, and monster travel through time to learn about the origins of their costumes. In our version each room down the RE wing as well as the Hearth Room will be decorated as a different place with reenactors from our community explaining the ancestor-based practices that inspired Halloween. We’ll travel to Medieval Europe to learn about Samhain\, Ancient Egypt to learn about Wag\, and Mexico to discover Dia de Los Muertos. Along our journey we’ll play games\, get candy\, and have lots of fun! \nCost is $20/family to cover the cost of food\, however if this is at all a hardship you’re welcome to pay what feels right to you.
