Beware of Phishing Attacks!

Date

UUCBers,

It has come to our attention that phishing attacks – messages via email or over the phone that induce individuals to reveal personal information, such as passwords and credit card numbers – have occurred more and more frequently over the past couple of weeks. The staff is aware that some of these attacks have been successful, which will likely lead to even more phishing attempts in the near future. It takes effort from each and every one of us to prevent the spread of these phishing attempts, so please keep these bits of advice in mind:

  • Staff members will only use @uuchurchofboulder.org email addresses to contact you. You can verify our email addresses on the Ministers & Staff page on our website.
  • No staff member will ever ask you for money, gift cards, etc. It is also highly unlikely that other UUCB community members will ever contact you for that purpose.
  • If an email contains weird spelling, grammar, and/or formatting quirks (extra spaces where they shouldn’t be), use caution before acting. These mistakes are a very common staple of phishing emails.

And most importantly,

  • If you are ever unsure whether or not the person emailing or calling you is who they say they are, contact them using a different means of communication (different email address, phone number, social media messaging, Zoom meeting, etc.) before replying to them or satisfying any of their requests.

While we as a staff and community aim to avoid fostering a culture of fear whenever we can, these attempts at stealing information are unfortunately a very real and potentially dangerous reality. As such, we appreciate your steadfastness in protecting our community (and beyond!) from cyber attacks of this nature.

If you have any questions, please contact our Office Administrator at office@uuchurchofboulder.org.

All our best,

The UUCB Staff Team
